At ancient sites like the Acropolis, visitors are not free to treat old stones like normal pavement. Official operating rules for the Acropolis prohibit damaging objects, removing items, producing litter, consuming food or drinks, and behaving or dressing in ways not compatible with the archaeological site. That is why guards may stop visitors who step into restricted zones or act carelessly around fragile ruins. In a photo, it may look like someone is simply exploring. In reality, one wrong step can damage surfaces that survived for centuries. The rule sounds strict, but the reason is simple: history cannot be replaced.
